MA tax credit could be worth $100′s for people who work in Rhode Island

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue issued Directive 12-1 recently that reverses a previous position (held since 1977) on Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) Act payments made to Rhode Island.

Directive 12-1 acknowledges that mandatory withholding payments made to support Rhode Island’s TDI Act are, in fact, considered an income tax which is creditable on MA Form 1, Schedule Z.

I ran the numbers on my clients with Rhode Island sourced income who paid RI TDI (shows up in Box 14 of Form W-2) and found that some would qualify for an additional credit on their MA tax returns and some would not. The maximum contribution to RI TDI in 2011 was $759, but it is not automatic that every taxpayer can claim this additional credit; it depends on the particular circumstances reflected in each taxpayer’s tax return.

Massachusetts income tax returns for 2009, 2010 and 2011 can be amended to claim the additional credit.

Contract award for Cape Cod Canal bridge repair work

Corps of Engineers awards $8.5 million contract for work on the Cape Cod Canal highway bridges

Work scheduled to start in mid-November

CONCORD, Mass. (Oct. 17, 2011) – Work on the Cape Cod Canal highway bridges in Buzzards Bay, Mass., will be completed under the terms of a $8,549,000 contract issued recently by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

The work on the Sagamore and Bourne bridges will be accomplished by Aetna Bridge Company, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The project will take about 12 months to complete and is scheduled to start in mid-November 2011.

The project involves the removal and replacement of structural steel secondary members, the strengthening of existing structural steel members, the replacement of structural fasteners, the removal of selected existing welds, and the strengthening of selected gusset plates.

The work will be located above the deck, and below the deck of the two bridges that cross the Cape Cod Canal. Work can proceed while traffic uses the bridges, but traffic control during selected times will be needed. Any changes or impacts to traffic using the bridges will be published by the Corps when a schedule is developed and the information will be available on the Corps’ Cape Cod Canal webpage under Bridge Alerts at:

The Comminity Preservation Coalition celebrated their 10th anniversary and presented Barbara Schneider of Falmouth a the 2011 Kuehn Awards for her significant contributions to the success of CPA during its first decade. Sign up now for 2011 Sheriff’s summer youth academy

Sheriff James Cummings isn’t looking for a few good men (and women), just two or three dozen Cape Cod teens who want to grow up that way.

If you fill the bill, or are a parent of someone who does, the time to sign up for the Sheriff’s summer Youth Academy is now. The start date is July 5^th, and the intervening month will go quickly. Early enrollment is recommended.

The academy teaches the importance of making sound decisions and sticking to them. Its target audience is 12- to 16-year-olds. A typical day includes a mix of march and drill, physical fitness training, classroom discourse, and discussions that stress emotional, ethical, and intellectual development.

Concluded Sheriff Cummings: “In summer’s past, we’ve worked with young teens who were well served by a push in this direction. Participants also get some sense of what a military or law enforcement job is like, and that’s to their benefit when it comes time to decide if it’s a career for them.”

Past instructors have been drawn from a mix of law enforcement, public safety, and military postings; these have included the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, Barnstable police and firefighters, State Police, the FBI, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Marine Corps.

The 12-day course will be conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays; the start date, as noted, is July 5^th; the final session will be on July 28^th; class will begin promptly at 8:30 AM and conclude at 1 PM.
