Falmouth, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket students participate in Student Government Day

BOSTON – State Representative Timothy R. Madden (Barnstable, Dukes & Nantucket) would like to congratulate the students in his district that represented their High Schools in this years, the 65th Annual Student Government Day at the State House in Boston earlie this month. Participants included Thomas Moakley and Vincent Lin of Falmouth High School, Meghan McHugh and Kevin Burchill of Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and Nikolay Nakov of Nantucket High School.

Since 1947, Student Government Day has afforded students from across the Commonwealth an opportunity to take on the roles of Governor, state legislators, constitutional officers and court justices to see what it is like to “run” State Government.

All five students in attendance were assigned as members of the House of Representatives and participated in events in the House Chamber. They engaged in mock debates, simulated Committee hearings and formal Senate and House sessions while shadowing their assigned official.

“It was wonderful to see so many students from the district in the building and participating in this unique experience including spending the day with government officials and observing the process of government first hand,” said “Representative Madden. “I was pleased to have the oppertunity to see Thomas, Vincent and Nikolay again as well as meet Meghan and Kevin for the first time”.

Student Government Day participants are selected by a process similar to local elections. Elections to select student delegates and their alternates are traditionally held in high schools throughout the state on the first Tuesday in November.

Falmouth Residents and Taxpayers

Falmouth RESIDENTS and TAXPAYERS (real estate owners) are allowed guaranteed entry to the New Balance Falmouth Road Race as a courtesy. In order to keep this program available, information submitted will be verified – and we request that only those truly eligible for the program submit their information through these forms. The registration fee for the 2012 race is $45.

Eligibility requirements:

Residents and taxpayers – as well as their spouses and children (under 23 years old) who live at home may receive guaranteed entry.
Resident status will be verified by one of the following methods:
i) appearance on Falmouth voter rolls
iii) submission of a current utility bill in the name of the householder
iv) submission of a copy of a driver license with a Falmouth address
Taxpayer status will be verified only by appearance on Falmouth real estate taxpayer rolls

Voter status or taxpayer status are preferred methods and may results in a quicker verification of your eligibility. If applicable, please provide your name as you expect it on the voter rolls or real estate ownership rolls.

Governor’s Office of Community Affairs is actively accepting applications for membership in the Governor’s Statewide Youth Council

Founded in 2008, the goal of the Council is to encourage the Commonwealth’s young people to take on an active leadership role in their communities and give them a greater voice in state government. The Youth Council acts an advisory body to the Governor and our Administration with a focus on youth-related issues such as education, youth violence, economic development and civic engagement. This past January, Youth Council members hosted “No Name Calling Day” in dozens of communities across the Commonwealth to continue the work of Governor Patrick’s historic anti-bullying legislation.

The Governor’s Office will select 28 young people to represent the Commonwealth’s 14 counties – two representatives per county. Youth Council applicants should be passionate, motivated, emerging leaders between the ages of 14 and 20 with an interest in public service. Responsibilities will include: attending monthly meetings and conference calls, advocating for youth issues and incorporating the ideas of other youth and young adults into the creation of effective policy.

Youth can apply to serve on the Council by submitting an application available at www.mass.gov/governor/youthcouncil by Friday, May 25, 2012. A selection committee will review applications and select the 28 members, who will then be notified via mail. Sagamore Bridge Work to begin March 20, 2012

Steel repairs on the Sagamore Bridge spanning the Cape Cod Canal in Bourne, Mass., are scheduled to start, weather permitting, on or about March 20, 2012, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials.

During the scheduled time for repair, travel over the Sagamore Bridge will be reduced to ONE LANE IN EACH DIRECTION. Traffic control will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through mid-to late-May 2012 (except for two weekends) to perform work above the road surface on the Sagamore Bridge. Motorists planning to use the Sagamore Bridge during this timeframe should be aware that travel delays are likely to occur during the morning and afternoon peak travel periods each day.

During the periods of Easter Weekend, April 7-8, and Patriots Weekend, April 14-16, all equipment will be removed from the Sagamore Bridge and all lanes will be open to traffic. The Bourne Bridge will be fully open to traffic as well for these weekends.

The $8.5 million Sagamore Bridge and Bourne Bridge repair project involves the removal and replacement of structural steel secondary members, strengthening of existing structural steel members, replacement of structural fasteners, removal of selected existing welds, and strengthening of selected gusset plates. Completion of steel repairs is critical to maintaining the integrity of the bridges, vital components of the transportation system for the Cape, the Islands and southeastern Massachusetts. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2012.

Signage will keep motorists advised of travel restrictions. Accessing the Canal website (CapeCodCanal.US, then Bridge Alerts) will inform motorists of schedule changes. Those who want to be notified of changes to the work schedule can sign up for the Bridge Alerts email notifications. The Town of Falmouth 300 Committee receives $500,000.00 Grant for Teaticket Park from the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary, Richard K. Sullivan. On hand to celebrate this event was Representative Timothy R. Madden, Senate President Therese Murray, Representative Randy Hunt, Falmouth Town Manager Julian Suso and the members of the 300 Committee.

Ms. Mary L. Pires celebrated her 100th birthday at Harborside Health Care in Falmouth. Representative Tim Madden was on hand to present her with a citation from the State House celebrating her 100 years.

MassDOT Announces Reimbursement for Falmouth for Tropical Storm Irene Repairs

BOSTON- Thursday, January 19, 2012- The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) today announced that President Obama’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is issuing federal funding to pay for repairs in Falmouth in the wake of damage caused by Tropical Storm Irene on August 26, 2011.

The reimbursement to Falmouth totals $300,000 for shoulder and sidewalk repairs on Menauhant Road.

“Irene packed a wallop for our state, and it still shows in the damage to our roads, bridges, and infrastructure. You don’t bounce back from that kind of severe weather on the cheap, and this money will double down on critical rebuilding efforts to get Falmouth back on track, said U.S. Senator John Kerry.

“I’m thankful that Falmouth will be reimbursed for much needed repairs made after Hurricane Irene came through,” said U.S. Senator Scott Brown. “This will go a long way to easing a major expense that the community faced.”

The Falmouth reimbursement is covered by one of two federal highway awards funding emergency repairs for damage caused by the tornados that hit the central and western parts of Massachusetts on June 1, 2011, and Tropical Storm Irene on August 26, 2011. These funds are in addition to reimbursements announced last month in Franklin, Berkshire and Bristol counties.

“We are pleased to reimburse communities such as Falmouth for the cost of making these necessary repairs and thank the Obama Administration and members of our Congressional delegation for their support and recognition of the great need in these emergency circumstances,” said MassDOT CEO and Secretary Richard A. Davey.

“Tropical Storm Irene caused significant damage to communities across the Commonwealth and many towns, including Falmouth, are dealing with unexpected expenses as they work to rebuild,” said Senate President Therese Murray. “Menauhant Road was severely damaged by the storm and it has been a major inconvenience to residents who live and work in the area. I am happy to see that Falmouth is included in the grant funds so the town can make the necessary repairs.”

“I am pleased that Falmouth has received reimbursement approval for repairs to Menauhant Road from the Federal Highway Administration through MassDOT,” said Rep. David Vieira. ”When Falmouth was not eligible for these repairs from FEMA after Hurricane Irene, DPW Director Ray Jack stayed the course and was able to secure these vital funds for the East Falmouth project. I hope to see the project begin before the summer season.”

“These funds will certainly help the town compensate for some of these unforeseen expenses which have greatly impacted an already stressed budget due to the current economic climate,” said Rep. Timothy R. Madden.

Environmental-study scholarships available

The Friends of Chatham Waterways is offering scholarships of $2,500 to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in environmental fields.

Applicants must be residents of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket, or graduates of a high school or college on the Cape or Islands.

Undergraduate applicants must be in or entering their junior or senior year of college and majoring in environmental studies, environmental management or a related subject. The scholarships are also available for graduate students specializing in these fields.
